Moments later they were jolted out of their reminiscence when there was a commotion from the other side of the ship. A young lad, much younger than Sam, climbed onto the shipâs rail, and before anybody could stop him, the child jumped. Daisy screamed and Sam ran across the deck, dragging at the buttons of his woollen jacket, flinging it across the deck and hopping as he tried to drag the heavy boots from his feet, while the ship rolled and bounced. He must save the boy.
With no thought for his own safety, Sam climbed the rail to reach the stricken child when he lost his footing and slipped, his leg dangling over the side of the ship and his scrawny body quickly following as he felt himself slipping towards the water.
Suddenly he felt a tug on his shirt collar. Then two huge hands slipped under his armpits and he was dragged back to safety.
âWeâve got to save him!â Sam cried as hot spikes of adrenaline coursed through his veins when he tried to make another bolt for the shipâs rail and, once again, he was pulled back.
âThere is nothing we can do,â said the young priest. His face had lost all colour and he looked as if he was going to be sick, but instead he leaned down and said in a low voice that commanded Samâs attention: âIf you go into the water you will be killed. Or eaten alive by sharks. We cannot risk another life. It is tragic, but we have lost him to Godâs care. We will pray for the repose of his troubled soul.â
Even though the R.M.S Sunshine dropped anchor and shipâs company searched for the stricken child, there was no sign. When the young priest said mass, there was not a dry eye on deck.
